What Are the Requirements for a SCIF Door?

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) are designed to safeguard classified information, and security begins at the front door. The only door. So, what are the requirements of this important entry?

Your SCIF’s door serves as the first line of defense, preventing unauthorized access and ensuring compliance with strict government regulations. The Intelligence Community Directive (ICD) 705 outlines specific requirements that SCIF doors must meet to maintain security integrity.

SCIF doors must be reinforced and constructed to prevent unauthorized entry, leveraging structural specifications that include:

Material and Thickness

  • Wooden Doors must be 1¾ inches thick with a solid core, such as wood stave or structural composite lumber.
  • Steel Doors should be 1¾ inches thick, with face steel of at least 18-gauge thickness for enhanced durability.

Reinforcements

  • Hinges should be reinforced with 7-gauge steel, preferably utilizing lift hinges to prevent door removal.
  • Lock Areas must be predrilled and reinforced with 10-gauge steel to accommodate high-security locking mechanisms.
  • Door Closures should be supported with 12-gauge steel and feature automatic, non-hold features (installed on the interior if possible) ensuring the door remains shut when not in use.
  • Vestibules: Incorporating a vestibule can enhance acoustic protection and prevent unauthorized visual observation.

Security Features

Beyond structural integrity, SCIF doors incorporate advanced security features to maintain the confidentiality of classified materials:

  • Access Control: High-security doors are typically equipped with biometric scanners, keycard access, or cipher locks to restrict entry.
  • Alarm Systems: All perimeter doors must be integrated into the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) for real-time monitoring.
  • Acoustic Protection: Doors must meet all ICD 705 sound attenuation requirements to prevent eavesdropping.
  • TEMPEST Compliance: Perimeter doors must adhere to TEMPEST shielding standards to prevent electromagnetic emissions that could compromise sensitive data.
